What is the UU United Nations Office?

The UU United Nations Office is a membership organization of individuals, congregations, and institutions in the United States and Canada. Leadership of the UU United Nations Office resides in a Board of Directors, an Executive Director, an Advisory Council, and Communications, Development, and Program Committees, ably assisted by a group of committed member volunteers and several energetic interns each semester. With its own board, budget, and programs, the UU United Nations Office speaks, acts and bears witness on behalf of Unitarian Universalists at the United Nations and within the governments of Canada and the US.

A major purpose of the UU United Nations Office is to educate UUs about the structure, function, and actions of the United Nations. UU United Nations Office members attend NGO Conferences and weekly DPI briefings and report to the Office. The UU United Nations Office then communicates with other UUs through the website, the newsletter, the Annual Intergenerational Spring Seminar, and informational films. Equally important, UU United Nations Office District and Local Envoys promote awareness of the UU United Nations Office’s yearly program, sponsor UN Sundays, and encourage congregational participation.

Through this work, the UU United Nations Office seeks to strengthen the United Nations in its efforts to promote peace and to eliminate war, discrimination, poverty and disease, thus re-affirming our belief in the essential unity of the human family. Inspired by Unitarian Universalist principles, we are committed to peace, freedom and environmental responsibility, as well as social, civil and economic justice for all.

Mission

The Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office promotes the goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all, as reflected in the United Nations Charter. Through targeted education, advocacy and outreach, we engage Unitarian Universalists in support of international cooperation and the work of the United Nations.
